Frequently Asked Questions
Before reaching out, you might find your answer in our FAQ below or in our comprehensive sleep guides.
Our calculators are based on the well-established 90-minute sleep cycle model used in sleep research. However, individual sleep cycles can range from 70-120 minutes. The calculator provides scientifically-informed estimates, but you should use the results as a starting point and adjust based on how you feel. Factors like age, fitness level, sleep disorders, and lifestyle can all affect your optimal sleep timing.
No. Sleep Calculator provides general information for educational purposes only. Our calculators are not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you have persistent sleep problems, insomnia, sleep apnea, or other sleep disorders, please consult a healthcare provider or board-certified sleep specialist. They can provide personalized guidance based on your specific health situation.
No. All calculations happen entirely in your browser using JavaScript. We don't store your sleep times, wake times, or any personal information on our servers. We don't require accounts or logins. The only data we collect is anonymous analytics to understand how visitors use our site. See our Privacy Policy for complete details.
The 15-minute buffer accounts for the time it typically takes to fall asleep (sleep latency). Research shows that most healthy adults take 10-20 minutes to fall asleep. By building this buffer into our calculations, we provide more realistic bedtime recommendations. If you consistently fall asleep faster or slower, you can mentally adjust the suggestions accordingly.
Absolutely! We love hearing ideas from our users. Send your suggestions to info@calculatemysleep.org. While we can't implement every suggestion, we carefully consider all feedback when planning improvements. Many of our current features came from user suggestions.
Our recommendations are calculated based on complete 90-minute sleep cycles, which often result in wake times that don't fall on round numbers. Waking at the end of a complete cycle (rather than in the middle of one) typically leaves you feeling more refreshed. A wake time of 6:45 AM after completing 5 full cycles will usually feel better than 7:00 AM if it interrupts a cycle.
Our Sleep by Age Calculator provides age-appropriate sleep recommendations for all ages, from newborns to seniors. Children have different sleep needs than adults, often requiring more total sleep. However, the 90-minute cycle model is based primarily on adult sleep patterns. For specific pediatric sleep concerns, consult your child's pediatrician.
You're welcome to link to our calculators from your website. If you're interested in embedding our calculators or other partnership opportunities, please contact us at info@calculatemysleep.org with details about your website and intended use.
Yes, all of our sleep calculators and educational content are completely free. There are no premium tiers, subscriptions, or hidden costs. We believe everyone should have access to tools that can help improve their sleep health.
Sleep debt is the cumulative effect of not getting enough sleep. When you consistently sleep less than your body needs, you accumulate a "debt" that can affect your cognitive function, mood, and health. Our Sleep Debt Calculator helps you track and understand your sleep deficit. While you can recover from short-term sleep debt, chronic sleep deprivation can have lasting effects.
